c. John was waiting ( wait) for the bus when he saw (see) an accident.

( J'attendais le bus ( "j'étais en train d'attendre le bus)==> action qui était en train de se dérouler = prétérit be + V-ing // quand j'ai vu l'accident ==> action qui interrompt = prétérit simple )

d. The thief sneaked  (sneak) into the house, stole (steal) the jewels and left (leave) without a trace.

( succession d'action qui ont eu lieu = prétérit simple )

( C'est "last night" = la nuit dernière, on aurait envie de mettre du prétérit simple mais : on nous indique "around 8 o'clock" = autour/ aux environs de 8 heures. Il faut donc utiliser le temps de la description du passé = prétériit be + V-ing )
